The dogs (Christmas) dinner.
My dog ate…….
I was having abit of a google the other day (about dogs obviously) when I came across a whole list of questions about what dogs can and can’t eat.
Many of them weren’t Christmas specific but it’s a time of year when we maybe let our guard down as we are busy. We may have visitors who don’t know the ‘rules’ or maybe leave the turkey carcess on the side?
There were some pretty random ones in there – just start typing “my dog ate” into google and you’ll see what I mean.
Do you know what is & isn’t safe for your dog to eat?
In days gone by dogs were often fed scraps from the table, there wasn’t the plethora of different dog foods we see nowadays. As our tastes and budgets have changed so have our table scraps. Gone are the days of meat and two veg. We now eat a much broader range of ‘exotic’ food many of which are bad for our dogs. As a result we need to be more careful about what we are feeding our dogs.
The list below shows some of the foods which can be deadly to our dogs and should be avoided all year round.
- Chocolate
- Onions
- Garlic
- Grapes
- Raisins
- Alcohol
- Macadamia nuts
- Avocado
- Mouldy and spoiled foods
- Mushrooms
- Tomato leaves and stems
- Potato peelings
The list isn’t exhaustive. As always, if you are concerned about something your dog has eaten get in touch with your vet as soon as possilbe.
Go ahead and give them abit of turkey and maybe the odd pig in blanket, if theres any left. Don’t give them anything which may harm them or upset their tummies, unless you like standing in the cold at midnight while they get it out of their system.
Have a Great Christmas!
