I have heard that using things such as prong collars, E collars or slip leads can speed up training – why don’t you use them ?
There is no scientific evidence that using prong collars, E collars (aka shock collars) or slip leads speeds up the training / learning process, it is often a sales technique used by ‘balanced’ trainers. But that’s not the only reason I choose to use science based techniques.
Science-based training refers to using methods and techniques that are grounded in the principles of animal learning theory and supported by research in the field of animal behaviour. It means applying approaches that are not only effective but also ethical, with an emphasis on the well-being of your dog. The goal is to build a positive, cooperative relationship between you and your dog, fostering trust, and communication.
This type of training is often rooted in positive reinforcement, where desirable behaviours are rewarded (with treats, praise, toys or things in the environment) to encourage their repetition. It focuses on motivating dogs to make the right choices rather than punishing undesirable behaviour. It’s an approach that prioritizes the emotional and mental well-being of the dog, promoting their confidence, mental stimulation, and overall happiness.
Why I Don’t Use Prong Collars or Shock Collars (aka E collars)
Prong collars and shock collars, are tools that rely on pain, discomfort, or fear to try to change behaviour. There is no evidence that they help speed up training and you are often reliant on the tool for ever more. Here’s why I choose not to use them:
- Negative Associations: These tools can cause dogs to associate pain or discomfort with certain situations or actions, which may lead to increased anxiety, fear, and confusion. For example, using a shock collar to correct a dog’s behaviour could result in the dog feeling scared or stressed in certain environments, which might worsen the problem behaviour.
- Physical Harm: Prong collars and shock collars can cause physical harm to dogs. Prong collars can cause bruising, pain, and even long-term damage to a dog’s neck, while shock collars can cause burns, discomfort, and distress. This physical harm can have lasting consequences on the dog’s health and well-being.
- Emotional Impact: Training methods based on pain or fear can negatively impact a dog’s emotional state. Instead of fostering trust, these methods can lead to a breakdown in the relationship between the dog and owner, causing the dog to feel anxious, fearful, or defensive. Positive reinforcement, on the other hand, builds a bond of trust and mutual respect.
- Ineffective Long-Term: While these methods may suppress certain behaviours temporarily, they do not address the underlying causes of the behaviour. For example, if a dog is using aggression because they are fearful, using punishment-based techniques may stop the aggressive behaviour in the short term, but the dog will still be fearful and may act out in other ways. Science-based training aims to address the root causes of behaviour, leading to more sustainable, long-term results.
- Better Alternatives: There are many positive, science-based alternatives that are both effective and humane. Techniques like positive reinforcement, desensitisation, counter-conditioning, and management strategies help dogs learn new behaviours while also respecting their emotional needs and well-being.
In Summary:
Science-based training focuses on using proven, kind, and effective methods to improve behaviour by understanding the dog’s needs and motivations. It avoids pain and fear-based tactics like prong and shock collars, as these methods can cause harm, both physically and emotionally, and may ultimately be ineffective in the long term. My approach emphasises building a positive relationship, understanding the underlying causes of behaviour, and using rewards and clear communication to help your dog become the best they can be.
