Harmless Fun?

Funny dog videos, guilty dog videos, cute dog videos.   Google any of those terms and a plethora of videos pop up.  We share them, ‘like’ them and tag our friends in them.

You know the sort of thing: an owner comes home to find the dog has shredded their bed, chewed the door frame or raided the bin.  They then film themselves while they chastise the dog.  the dog looks guilty, ears down, brow furrowed. They really do look guilty, in fact all to often then are worried or scared.

Body Language

Dog body language is a fascinating subject, once you start looking into it you will never look at your dog (or anyone else’s) in the same way again and your relationship and understanding of them will increase immeasurably. There are some brilliant books and videos out there on dog body language – get in touch if you’d like a few recommendations.

In truth, dogs can’t feel guilt.   It’s just not in their make up. They shred a bed, chew the carpet or raid the bin because either it feels good or they aren’t happy. To tell them off several hours after the event has no impact other than to erode our relationship with them.

Remember – Your His Best Friend

Think of it this way. You’ve been at home alone all day with no one to talk to and no one to play with so you make your own entertainment. Your family come home (the entertainment long forgotten) and you are really pleased to see them but all of a sudden they start talking to you in an accusatory tone – you have no clue why – all you did was say “Hello”. How would you feel?

I’m not on a one-woman mission to stop these videos because I won’t succeed but by not ‘liking’ or sharing them (which is why there isn’t one in this post) I am doing my bit.
