Puppy Training Classes: Are They Better Than 1-1 Training?

I’ve seen a couple of posts recently talking about why puppy training classes aren’t a good move for puppies. With the rise of TikTok and other social media platforms, there’s a huge amount of information out there, some helpful, some… not so much.

So I completely understand why some owners choose not to come to puppy classes.

But it’s worth bearing in mind that not all puppy classes are created equal.

And when they’re done well, they can be one of the most valuable things you do for your puppy. Spoiler alert – ours are done properly (as you would expect in Harrogate :0)

🐾 Puppy Classes or 1-1 Training ?

Before we dive in, I do want to say that this isn’t about saying one is “right” and one is “wrong.” which is why we offer both options.

Both have their place.

🏡 1-1 Puppy Training – The Pros

One-to-one training can be brilliant for:

  • Puppies who are easily worried or overwhelmed
  • Specific issues
  • Owners who want completely personalised support
  • Working on things inside the home environment

You get:

  • Full attention from your trainer
  • A tailored plan just for you and your puppy
  • The ability to go at your puppy’s exact pace
  • The opportunity to ask as many questions as you like

⚠️ The Downside of 1-1 Training

A good trainer will absolutely encourage you to get your puppy out into the world and experiencing new things. But when you only see your trainer for an hour a week, those learning opportunities can naturally be more limited, especially when it comes to safely practising around other dogs, people and real-life distractions.

In a well-run group class, puppies get the chance to learn in a more realistic environment, while still having the safety and support they need to succeed.

They can practise:

• Focusing around other puppies
• Settling in a more exciting environment
• Watching the world go by calmly
• Building confidence without being overwhelmed

And because there are a few puppies in the class, a good trainer will often spot subtle signs that a puppy may be struggling, getting worried or becoming over-aroused before things escalate.

That means we can step in early, adjust the environment and help puppies learn at their own pace — rather than them being thrown into situations they simply aren’t ready for yet.

Sadly, we hear all the time about puppies being taken out to “socialise”, only to end up overwhelmed by off-lead dogs rushing over or interactions that were too much, too soon.

A good group class provides controlled exposure to the real world — helping puppies become comfortable around distractions and other dogs, without the unpredictability that can sometimes knock their confidence.

🐶 Puppy Classes – The Pros (When Done Properly)

This is where good puppy classes come into their own.

Not chaotic, free-for-all sessions… but structured, thoughtful classes designed for real life.

What makes our puppy classes in Harrogate and Knaresborough different?

  • Small groups (max 7 puppies)
→ No overwhelm, no chaos, no being “lost in the crowd”
  • Two trainers at every session
→ You still get that 1-1 level of support when you need it
  • No free-for-all play
→ We focus on calm, controlled exposure, not hyped-up chaos
  • Real-life skills, not just “sit” and “down”
→ We teach your puppy how to exist in the world, not just perform cues
  • Positive reinforcement only
→ Building confidence, trust, and willingness—not fear or compliance

🌍 Why Training Around Other Puppies Matters

This is the bit that often gets overlooked.

Your puppy doesn’t just need to learn behaviours
They need to learn how to:

  • Focus on you when other dogs are around
  • Stay calm in exciting environments
  • Make good choices despite distractions
  • Feel safe and confident in a busy world

A well-run class gives you:

  • Controlled exposure
  • Safe distances
  • Professional guidance
  • Real-life practice

💬 “But I’ve Heard Puppy Classes Can Make Things Worse…”

They can.

If they’re run badly.

Things that don’t work:

  • Big, chaotic groups
  • Letting puppies run wild together
  • No structure or guidance
  • Overwhelming nervous puppies

That’s where the bad reputation comes from.

But a properly run class is the complete opposite:

  • Calm
  • Structured
  • Supportive
  • Focused on emotional wellbeing

⭐ Why Owners Choose Our Puppy Classes

We’re incredibly proud of our 5-star reviews, and they all say a similar thing:

👉 It’s not just what we teach
👉 It’s how we teach it

Owners love that:

  • They feel supported (not judged)
  • Their puppy isn’t overwhelmed
  • They learn practical, real-life skills
  • Their puppy comes away more focused and settled
  • The classes are fun

Because at the end of the day…

This isn’t about ticking off “sit” and “down.”

It’s about creating a puppy who can:

  • Cope in the real world
  • Make good choices
  • Stay connected to you—even when life gets busy
  • Enjoy training with you

🤔 So… Classes or 1-1?

Here’s the honest answer:

👉 The best option depends on your puppy.

But for most puppies?

A well-run class offers something you can’t get elsewhere:
safe, structured real-life experience.

And that’s what sets them up for long-term success.

🐾 Final Thoughts

If you’ve been unsure about puppy classes, you’re not alone. There’s a lot of noise out there, and it can be hard to know what’s right.

But when classes are:

  • Small
  • Thoughtfully run
  • Focused on real-life skills
  • Built around positive reinforcement as advised by all welfare organisations including The Dogs Trust

They can be an absolute game-changer.
